RV Trip Day 1- AZ
Picacho Peak…again? YES.
I had such a fun time the first round, I had to share the experience with my cousin, Amy, when she came to town. The RV magically fit in a parking space right by the trailhead - score! I impressively parked that beast perfectly in the lines on the first try. [A big thanks to mom & dad for letting us borrow the RV, by the way.]
It was VERRYYYYY windy out (as you can tell by my hair). Still seemed safe enough to climb, but if it were any worse, I wouldn’t recommend it.
HIKE TIPS:
Don’t forget you have to pay to get in! Unless you have the pass, it is the Picacho Peak State Park.
They have decent bathrooms considering its a trailhead (flushing, soap & TP).
There are TWO trail start options. The closest one to the entrance is what we did, and it is pretty short and straight up. You can continue over where the campground area is to the other trailhead. That one is much longer but also flat through the desert for most of it till you reach the mountain. Look closely on the cactus photo and you may be able to see that trail inn the background.
It was a bit cold, but we still drank a ton of water - remember it is DRY in AZ! They recommend at least 3L to be safe.
As for everywhere in life - pack it in, pack it out! Someone left a bunch of mayo packets like breadcrumbs along the trail - while 1 is funny, the several we found were too many and just pure litter.
HIKE STATS:
Drinks: 2 L of water each & 1 boxed chardonnay
Length: 3.4 miles on the Garmin Fenix 5s (loaded into AllTrails)
Time: 2 hours 34 minutes
Elevation Gain: 2,064
Next up: Mount Wrightson Wilderness. This was the perfect warmup hike here at Picacho the day before!
